KOKO BODY SKINCARE RITUALS
Why Does Fair Trade Matter For Skincare?
Fair Trade Matters. Here’s Why.
When you purchase your favourite skincare product, you’re doing more than just buying a simple moisturiser or face wash. Behind the pretty packaging, there’s a long chain of suppliers, workers and farmers who helped create each product and each ingredient. Which is why fair trade is so important.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is a social movement that helps workers in developing countries get better trading conditions. It’s all about advocating a higher payment price to workers. As well as improved social and environmental standards. It’s an incredible force that in recent years has helped highlight marginalised producers around the world. There’s always been a lot of talk about the term fair trade in the food industry. What many people don’t realise is that we face the same issue in sourcing ingredients in the beauty world too. Especially because we use large amounts of food grade ingredients to make Koko Body.
How Can We Encourage Change?
The past decade has seen a huge increase in demand for organic and clean beauty products. Shoppers like you become more aware of the chemicals being put on your skin. This upswing has caused many people to start shining the spotlight on exactly where these natural goodies are coming from and how they’re being produced. Looking for fair trade food like coffee and chocolate is becoming more mainstream. We can choose change every time we go shopping. Check the ingredients list at the supermarket, not just for your food but for your skincare and beauty products too. A staggering number of cosmetic ingredients are still produced under horrific working conditions, and there are farms that often use child labour to harvest products. You may have heard about the tragic child labour in mica mining, but mica’s not the only problem ingredient. Other common ingredients like cacao, sugar, shea butter, and carnauba wax have also been found to involve child labour, forced labour, and overall terrible working conditions. At Koko Body we choose to use fair trade sugar, shea, cacao and carnauba for this reason.
So what does this mean to you?
When you’re picking up beauty bits that have fair trade ingredients, you’re directly impacting the lives of workers all around the world. This is why fair trade products can be a little pricier than your standard supermarket purchases. They reflect the fair and ethical practices that should always be upheld. When you see a facewash for $3.99, it’s likely those workers were not paid a liveable wage. Here at Koko Body, we’re passionate about not only making Fair Trade products, but also supporting sustainability practices and maintaining a cruelty free brand. These are the core values we believe in and we love having customers who care about this too. So the next time you’re stocking up on your skincare, think about the products you’re choosing… If you want to learn more about the fair trade movement. Check out Fair Trade N.Z.
